Liverpool vs Chelsea: Reds win 6-5 on penalties after 1-1 to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Cody Gakpo cancelled out Morgan Rogers' penalty, then Wesley Fofana blazed over to settle a long shootout at Anfield.

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea (Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties). Liverpool are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Chelsea in a long shootout at Anfield on Wednesday night, which finished in the early hours of Thursday in Pakistan.
How the match went
Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot, Yahoo Sports reported. Liverpool were level about three minutes later: Cody Gakpo also scored from 12 yards before half-time. Neither side found a winner after that, and the tie went to penalties.
The shootout
It swung both ways:
- Chelsea's Valentin Barco hit the woodwork.
- Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas shot over the bar.
- Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders saved from Ryan Gravenberch.
- Liverpool keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved from Emmanuel Emegha.
- Jordan Henderson scored for Chelsea and Joe Gomez for Liverpool.
- Wesley Fofana then blazed over the bar, and Liverpool won 6-5.
The win keeps Andoni Iraola's Liverpool in the hunt for a trophy they have won more often than anyone, and sends Chelsea out days after their home defeat to Spurs, ESPN's coverage showed.
What next
Liverpool join the last eight of the English League Cup. The quarter-final draw decides their opponent. The same round had already produced one of the shocks of the season, when League Two Fleetwood knocked Arsenal out on penalties (read our report).
