Where the two sides stand

Manchester City lead the Premier League with a 100 per cent record and are six points ahead of Liverpool, Al Jazeera reported. A win at Anfield would stretch the gap to nine; a Liverpool win would cut it to three and end City's perfect start.

Why the atmosphere is the story

City are the first visitors to Anfield since an independent commission found them guilty of serious financial breaches: more than 100 rules, with the commission ruling that "sham" deals had inflated revenue and cut costs by more than £900 million between 2009 and 2018. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed, so the ruling is not the last word.

Liverpool supporters are planning a loud welcome:

• The fan group Spion Kop 1906 has asked supporters to bring flags and scarves and to be loud "from the first minute".
• A post on social media is promoting a "bus greeting" near the stadium several hours before kick-off.
• Merseyside Police say an appropriate policing operation will be in place.

The last big flashpoint was in 2018, when City's team bus was hit by bottles and flares before a Champions League tie at Anfield; UEFA fined Liverpool 20,000 euros. Gary Neville has predicted a "brutal day" for City, with banners and chanting.
