Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0 at home in La Liga on Saturday 10 October, but the night belonged to Vinicius Jr, who came off the bench, scored, saw the goal ruled out and was then sent off for pulling the hair of Villarreal's Nathan Saliba, Al Jazeera reported.

How the match went

  • The winner: Yan Diomande scored the only goal, a low finish into the far corner after Federico Valverde slipped him through.
  • The red card: Vinicius started on the bench under Jose Mourinho. After he came on he put the ball in the net, but a VAR review of the build-up showed him pulling Saliba's hair. Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera disallowed the goal and showed him a straight red.
  • The result: three points that take Madrid provisionally third.

The La Liga table after Saturday

TeamSaturday's resultGap to the top

Atletico Madridbeat Alaves 2-15 points behind
Real Madridbeat Villarreal 1-06 points behind

Barcelona's win kept them clear at the top, and Atletico's kept them second, one point ahead of Madrid.

What the red card means

A straight red in La Liga brings an automatic ban of at least one match, and the competition committee can add more for violent conduct once it has read the referee's report. The length of Vinicius's ban had not been announced by Sunday morning. Spanish media are already asking whether he could miss the Clasico against Barcelona, which would be the biggest match of Madrid's autumn; we will add the ruling when it comes.

For Mourinho, it is an awkward start to the week: a clean sheet and a win, but his most famous forward now faces a suspension.

Watching La Liga in Pakistan

Spain is three hours behind Pakistan in October, so a 9pm kick-off in Madrid is midnight PKT. Weekend fixtures that start at 2pm or 4:15pm in Spain fall at 5pm or 7:15pm PKT, the easiest La Liga games to catch after work.
