NADRA tracking ID check: how to see where your CNIC application is stuck

Your tracking ID is not your CNIC number. Here is where to find it, the three ways to check status, what each fee and timeline actually buys, and what to do when the application stops moving.

You applied for a CNIC, a renewal or a B-form, you were handed a receipt, and now nothing is happening. This is how to find out where the file actually is.

First, the thing most people get wrong: your tracking ID is not your CNIC number. Your CNIC is the 13-digit number printed on the card. Your tracking ID is the reference generated when your application was submitted, and it is on your NADRA receipt and in the confirmation SMS or email you were sent. Without it, none of the tracking methods work.

1. Where your tracking ID is

Three places, in order of how likely they are to work:

  1. The receipt slip from the NADRA Registration Centre. The tracking ID is printed on it, usually near the top or beside the barcode.
  2. The SMS or email NADRA sent when the application was submitted, if you gave a mobile number or address.
  3. Inside the Pak-ID account you applied from, if you applied online. Sign in and open Existing Applications.

If all three are gone, you cannot recover a tracking ID by guessing. Call the helpline with your CNIC number and the date and centre you applied at, and ask them to locate it.

2. Check by SMS

The SMS route is the quickest and works on any handset.

Send your tracking ID to 8400. Type the tracking ID only, with no spaces, no hyphens and no words before or after it. A message with anything extra in it is the single most common reason people get no reply.

Standard SMS charges apply from your operator. If nothing comes back within a few minutes, check you have sent the tracking ID and not your CNIC number.

3. Check on the Pak-ID portal

The portal is at id.nadra.gov.pk. The steps:

  1. Open the portal and sign in, accepting the terms.
  2. Choose CNIC or NICOP, then Apply Now.
  3. Open Existing Applications.
  4. Select your tracking ID to see the current status and the application detail.

If you applied in person at a Registration Centre rather than online, you may not have a Pak-ID account tied to that application. The SMS route and the helpline are your options in that case.

4. Check on the Pak-ID app

NADRA's app is listed as Pak Identity on both the App Store and Google Play. The flow inside it is the same as the portal: sign in, go to existing applications, open your tracking ID. Use the app rather than the portal on a phone, because the portal's upload screens are unpleasant on a small display.

5. Call the helpline

From inside Pakistan: 1777. From overseas: +92 51 111 786 100. The service runs 24 hours.

Have the tracking ID, your CNIC number, and the date and location where you applied ready before you dial. The helpline can tell you the stage a file is at and whether something is pending from your side, which is what you actually need to know.

What the fees and timelines buy you

These are the NADRA fees and processing times as of the April 2026 schedule. The processing time is the category you paid for, and it runs from submission, not from the day you started thinking about it.

ServiceCategoryFeeProcessing time
New smart CNICNormalRs 75031 days
New smart CNICUrgentRs 1,50023 days
New smart CNICExecutiveRs 2,5009 days
Renewal or modificationNormalRs 40031 days

Renewal or modificationExecutiveRs 2,1509 days
B-form (child registration)NormalRs 507 days
B-form (child registration)ExecutiveRs 5001 day
Family Registration CertificateExecutive onlyRs 1,00024 hours

First-time issuance of a CNIC to a Pakistani citizen is free.

For overseas Pakistanis, NICOP is priced in dollars by zone. Zone A, which covers the USA and Europe, is $39 normal, $57 urgent and $75 executive. Zone B, covering the Middle East and Africa, is $20 normal, $30 urgent and $40 executive.

Our NADRA fee calculator works out the total for a specific service and category, and the passport fee calculator does the same for the other document you will probably need in the same month.

Why applications actually get stuck

In most cases the file is not lost, it is waiting on something. The usual causes:

A verification query on family data. If your parents' or spouse's records do not line up with what you submitted, the file sits until it is resolved. This is the most common cause of a long delay and it will not clear itself.

A biometric mismatch. Faded fingerprints, common in manual trades and in older applicants, can fail the match. It is fixed with a second visit to the centre, not by waiting.

A blocked CNIC. If the identity is blocked for a verification reason, no application on it will progress until the block is lifted. Tracking will keep showing the file as in process.

A pending document. A missing attested document or an unclear scan holds the file. The portal usually shows this; the SMS reply usually does not.

Category confusion. People pay the normal fee and expect executive speed. A normal application is 31 days, and day 20 is not a delay.

When to escalate, and how

If you are past the processing time for the category you paid for, escalate rather than reapply. Reapplying creates a second file and slows both down.

Go back to the Registration Centre you applied at with the receipt, and ask for the reason code on the file. If that fails, NADRA takes complaints through the helpline on 1777 and through its complaint channels online, and a complaint reference gives you something to quote on the next call.

Do not pay an agent standing outside a Registration Centre to speed up a file. They have no ability to change a verification hold, and handing over your receipt and CNIC copy to a stranger is how identity fraud starts.

The quick version

  • Tracking ID, not CNIC number. It is on the receipt.
  • SMS the tracking ID alone to 8400.
  • Or check Existing Applications on id.nadra.gov.pk or the Pak Identity app.
  • Helpline 1777 in Pakistan, +92 51 111 786 100 from abroad.
  • Normal is 31 days. Only escalate once you are past the time you paid for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my NADRA tracking ID by SMS?
Send your tracking ID on its own to 8400, with no spaces, hyphens or extra words. The tracking ID is the reference printed on your NADRA receipt, not your 13-digit CNIC number.
What is the difference between a tracking ID and a CNIC number?
The CNIC number is the 13-digit number printed on your identity card. The tracking ID is the reference generated when you submit an application, and it is what NADRA's tracking services expect.
How long does a normal CNIC application take?
Thirty-one days for a normal smart CNIC or a renewal. Urgent is 23 days and executive is 9 days, at higher fees.
What do I do if my CNIC application is stuck past the processing time?
Return to the Registration Centre you applied at with your receipt and ask for the reason code on the file, or call 1777. Do not submit a second application, as two open files slow each other down.
