Rawalpindi's first drive-through vehicle emission testing station opened on Monday, 2 November 2026 on GT Road near Ayub Park, giving private car and motorcycle owners a place to get a smoke test and fitness certification without leaving the driver's seat, ProPakistani reported.

The station runs under the Punjab Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS), which the provincial government has widened from commercial vehicles to private ones as part of its anti-smog drive.

Why it matters now

Rawalpindi traffic police began a crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles in October on the orders of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Chief Traffic Officer Farhan Aslam. Special squads check vehicles at bus terminals and the city's entry and exit points, and violators' vehicles are impounded until the owner gets a valid fitness certificate, along with heavy fines, ProPakistani reported on 16 October.

So a certificate from the new station is the simplest way to avoid having your car or bike held in November and December, when smog is at its worst in Punjab.

What the test costs

Punjab's Environmental Protection Agency notified these emission testing fees with effect from 1 October 2025 (notification 353/PA/DG/EPA/2025, as reported by PakWheels):

VehicleFee
MotorcycleRs 100
RickshawRs 300
Car up to 1000ccRs 500
1000cc to 1500ccRs 800
1500cc to 2500ccRs 1,000
2500cc to 4500ccRs 1,500
Over 4500ccRs 2,000

Confirm the fee at the counter: the new station has not published its own rate card, and fees can be revised by a fresh notification.

How to prepare

  1. Take the vehicle registration book or smart card and your CNIC.
  2. Get a tune-up first if the exhaust shows visible smoke: a dirty air filter, old engine oil or worn spark plugs are the usual causes, and fixing them is cheaper than an impound.
  3. Keep the certificate in the vehicle, since checks happen at the roadside.

A well-tuned engine also uses less fuel; see what your car costs to run with the fuel average calculator, and check the annual token tax while your papers are out.
