T20 World Cup: Pakistan's results, squad, record and what comes next

Pakistan's last T20 World Cup ended in the Super 8 stage in March 2026, on net run rate, despite a record-breaking run from opener Sahibzada Farhan. This page keeps the results, squad, record and what comes next in one place, and we update it as the side moves toward the 2028 edition.

Pakistan's 2026 results

All of Pakistan's matches were played in Sri Lanka under the ICC's arrangement that India-Pakistan fixtures at events hosted by either country go to a neutral venue.

Pakistan were in Group A with India, the USA, Namibia and the Netherlands. Three wins took them into the Super 8s, where they joined England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group 2.

How Pakistan went out

The washout against New Zealand proved costly. Going into the last Super 8 game, Pakistan needed to beat Sri Lanka and hold them to 147 or less to overtake New Zealand on net run rate. They won by 5 runs after Sri Lanka reached 207/6, which left both sides on 3 points and New Zealand through on run rate.

The India game also carried off-field drama: Pakistan's government first announced a boycott of the 15 February fixture, then reversed it days later. The captains did not shake hands at the toss.

Named by the PCB on 25 January 2026:

Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Khawaja Mohammad Nafay, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Naseem Shah, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Usman Khan, Usman Tariq.

Pakistan's best performers

1. Sahibzada Farhan: 383 runs in 7 matches, average 76.60, strike rate 160.25. That is the most runs by any batter in a single T20 World Cup. He was also the first to score two hundreds in one edition, and his 176-run stand with Fakhar Zaman against Sri Lanka is a tournament record partnership.
2. Usman Tariq: 10 wickets in 6 matches, Pakistan's leading wicket-taker, including 4 against Namibia and 3/27 against the USA.
3. Fakhar Zaman made 84 in the win over Sri Lanka; Abrar Ahmed took 3/23 in the same game.

Pakistan's T20 World Cup history

Pakistan remain one of only a handful of sides to have won the men's title, and 2009 is still their only T20 world crown.

The 2026 final

India made 255/5, with Sanju Samson scoring 89 off 46 balls, and bowled New Zealand out for 159 in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah took 4/15. It was India's third title and made them the first side to defend the trophy.

What comes next

• T20Is at home: three matches against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on 9, 11 and 13 October 2026, followed by an ODI tri-series with Sri Lanka and England from 18 to 31 October.
• Asian Games: a separate, younger Pakistan side captained by Sahibzada Farhan plays the T20 event in Nagoya, Japan, entering at the quarter-final stage on 28 September. The women's team, led by Fatima Sana, starts on 17 September.
• Coaching: Mike Hesson remains white-ball head coach and has also taken interim charge of the Test side after the 0-3 series loss in England. Read more on Babar Azam's return to first-class cricket.
• 2028 T20 World Cup: Australia and New Zealand co-host 20 teams and 55 matches in October and November 2028. Pakistan are already among the qualified teams. Venues are due to be named by the end of 2026, and exact dates have not been announced.

For 2026, Myco held the rights in Pakistan. Matches were shown on PTV Sports and Geo Super, and streamed on the Myco, Tamasha, ARY Zapp and Tapmad apps, with Urdu commentary on PTV National. Rights for 2028 in Pakistan have not been announced; we will add them here when they are.
