New Zealand's 6-month graduate work visa opens 16 November: who qualifies

New Zealand opens a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa on Monday 16 November 2026. It gives international graduates 6 months of open work rights, meaning you can work for any employer without a job offer in hand. On the same day, New Zealand widens its main Post-Study Work Visa to cover more graduate diploma holders.

For Pakistani students already in New Zealand, or deciding where to study next, this closes a gap: until now, many shorter diploma courses led to no work visa at all.

Who can apply for the 6-month visa

According to Immigration New Zealand, you need to:

1. Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6 or 7 (diploma and graduate-level courses).
2. Have studied it full-time, in New Zealand, for at least 24 weeks.
3. Not qualify for the Post-Study Work Visa. This route is for people who fall just short of it.
4. Show at least NZD 5,000 available to support yourself. Convert that at today's rate with our currency converter.
5. Meet health requirements, including a medical certificate and chest X-ray where required.
6. Never have held a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post-Study Work Visa before.
7. If your study was funded by a New Zealand government scholarship, get written approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Education New Zealand.

English language, foundation and bridging courses do not count.

Deadlines and limits

• Apply within 3 months of your New Zealand student visa expiring. Miss that window and the route is closed.
• It is a one-time visa: it cannot be extended or granted twice.
• You can work as an employee only. You cannot own or run a business on it.
• It does not let you support a partner or children for their own work or student visas.

Immigration New Zealand has not published the fee on its announcement page. Check the official fee finder before you apply, and do not pay an agent who quotes a "visa fee" you cannot see on immigration.govt.nz.

The Post-Study Work Visa change

From the same date, graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma and already hold a bachelor's degree can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to 1 year. There is no limit on when the bachelor's degree was awarded, so a Pakistani graduate with an older BS or BBA qualifies. Conditions:

• The graduate diploma must be studied full-time in New Zealand.
• No cross-credits or recognition of prior learning towards it.
• You must show your bachelor's degree certificate and official transcript.

What it means if you are applying from Pakistan

• Pick the course with the visa in mind. A full-time Level 5 to 7 diploma of at least 24 weeks now carries 6 months of work rights. A Level 7 graduate diploma on top of a Pakistani bachelor's can carry up to a year.
• Six months is short. Treat it as time to get New Zealand work experience or a job offer that supports a longer visa, not as a settlement route.
• Budget honestly. The NZD 5,000 is on top of fees and rent while you study. Check your family's costs in rupees before you commit.
• Get your documents ready now. HEC-attested degree and transcripts, a valid passport and a clean police record take weeks to arrange in Pakistan. Check current passport fees on the DGIP website before you book.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Enrolling in a part-time or online course: it will not qualify.
• Applying more than 3 months after your student visa ends.
• Assuming the visa lets you start a business or freelance as a company owner.
• Paying consultants who promise "guaranteed" work visas. Only Immigration New Zealand decides.
