Over 35,000 flu-like patients in six Lahore government hospitals in a week as smog worsens
Mayo Hospital alone saw more than 11,000 people with flu, influenza or COVID-like symptoms; some rapid tests came back positive for COVID-19.
Six major government hospitals in Lahore have reported more than 35,000 patients with flu-, influenza- and COVID-19-like symptoms in the past seven days, ProPakistani reported, citing sources. The rise comes as smog worsens and seasonal viral infections spread across the city.
Patients by hospital
| Hospital | Patients reported |
|---|---|
| Mayo Hospital | More than 11,000 |
| Services Hospital | More than 9,800 |
| Jinnah Hospital | More than 1,000 |
Thousands more went to Lahore General Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and the Children's Hospital with similar complaints, the report said. It did not give separate counts for those three. Sources also said rapid tests had found positive COVID-19 cases.
What doctors say
Professor Shahbaz Ghori, whom the report identifies as the head of the ENT department at Services Hospital, said different COVID-19 variants may cause milder illness than earlier strains, but that people should not ignore their symptoms. He explained that COVID-19, seasonal influenza and smog can all produce similar respiratory symptoms, which is why timely medical examination matters.
He urged anyone with flu-like symptoms to see a qualified doctor rather than diagnose or treat themselves.
Advice for residents
As air pollution and viral infections rise together, the report said residents are being advised to:
- avoid unnecessary outdoor activity;
- wear a mask;
- keep up good hygiene to limit the spread of infection;
- see a qualified doctor for persistent symptoms.
The counts are visits by patients with these symptoms, not confirmed cases of any one illness, and the report gives no test figures. If you need a doctor or hospital near you, our directory lists hospitals in Lahore and doctors in Lahore.
