ECP sets 7 February 2027 for first phase of Punjab local government elections, halts KP process
The election commission accepted Punjab's request for a February poll after the province first asked for April, and suspended local government polling steps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed 7 February 2027 for the first phase of local government elections in Punjab, and has halted the local government election process in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts until further orders.
The commission announced the date on Thursday after a hearing before a four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. In a short order it said it had accepted the request submitted by the Punjab chief secretary.
Why the date moved
The Punjab chief secretary told the commission that the provincial government had first agreed to hold the polls between 15 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. After consultations, the Punjab cabinet committee recommended April 2027 instead. Its reasons were smog, dense fog and bad weather, the holy month of Ramadan, and schoolteachers (who staff polling stations) not being available in those weeks.
The provincial government then asked for January or February 2027, saying weather usually improves in February. The ECP took that request into account and chose 7 February. It said the decision was meant to give all candidates and voters equal opportunities.
What happens in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Separately, the ECP suspended all measures taken for local government polls in KP districts until further orders, after reviewing a federal government order. Last week the commission had told its office to prepare the election programme for KP districts where constituency delimitation was complete, with 12 districts excluded under special administrative arrangements. Geo News and Business Recorder both report the halt.
Islamabad
The ECP stressed that it is responsible for holding local government elections across the provinces, the cantonment areas and Islamabad. Days earlier it said it had procured all the material needed for the Islamabad Capital Territory polls and had arranged to print ballot papers, as reported by Business Recorder.
What it means for voters
Only the first phase in Punjab has a date. The commission has not yet published the schedule for later phases or the nomination timeline in the sources we reviewed, so check the ECP notice before assuming a deadline. Voters should confirm that their registration and polling station are correct well before February.
We will update this page when the ECP issues the full election programme. For more on the day's political stories, see our politics desk.
