What it adds to a building budget
Cement is bought by the hundred bags for any grey structure, so small weekly moves add up:
- In Lahore, at Rs 1,630 a bag, 100 bags cost Rs 163,000.
- The 1.66% rise in the north in one week adds about Rs 2,700 per 100 bags.
- The same 100 bags cost Rs 147,600 in Karachi and Rs 165,300 in Multan.
Working out the size of the plot first helps: the marla to square feet converter gives the covered area, and if the house is for rent, the rental yield calculator shows what return the build cost buys. Buyers of a finished house also pay stamp duty and capital gains tax on resale.
Why it matters
Cement is one of the largest single costs in a grey structure, and each weekly move is passed on in contractors' per-square-foot rates. Rising fuel and electricity costs, which the IMF expects to keep inflation near 10% this year (our report), feed directly into kiln and freight costs.
