Team news
Cole Palmer is available again after serving his one-match ban for the red card against Tottenham, and his next Premier League goal will be his 50th. But Xabi Alonso's injury list is growing: Maxence Lacroix went off with a hamstring problem in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool, Joao Pedro (thigh) is out for a few weeks, Reece James is out until the new year after knee surgery, and Jamie Gittens (ankle) is also missing. Malo Gusto and Moises Caicedo are being assessed after playing through pain at Anfield.
Manchester United have no suspensions. Michael Carrick's side lost 4-1 to Como and 3-0 to Bournemouth in their last two games.
The numbers that matter
From Chelsea's official match facts:
- Head to head: 199 games, Chelsea 56 wins, 61 draws, United 82 wins. It is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, 27 of 68 meetings.
- United are winless in eight in all competitions (three draws, five defeats) and have not won away since the last day of last season. Their seven points from eight league games is their lowest at this stage since 1986-87.
- United are the only Premier League side yet to score in the first 30 minutes of a league match this season.
- Chelsea's games have produced 32 goals, more than any other team after eight matchweeks (17 scored, 15 conceded), and they are unbeaten in their last 11 Saturday lunchtime league games.
- Matheus Cunha has five goals in seven Premier League games against Chelsea, four of them at Stamford Bridge. Danny Welbeck has six against his old club United.
- The last meeting at Stamford Bridge, on 18 April 2026, went 1-0 to United.
Why it matters
The Independent calls it a "hugely significant" first meeting of Alonso and Carrick as managers, with pressure on Carrick after United's run. Chelsea, two points off fourth-placed Liverpool, can close on the top four with a win.
