Novak Djokovic is out of the Shanghai Masters. The 39-year-old lost his first match of the tournament, a second-round tie, 6-4, 6-3 to Hubert Hurkacz of Poland on Friday 9 October, in a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes, AFP reported via ARY News. Shanghai is three hours ahead of Pakistan, so the match finished on Friday afternoon PKT.

It was Hurkacz's first win over Djokovic in nine meetings.

How the match went

  • Serve: Hurkacz, the world number 34 and the 2023 Shanghai champion, hit 13 aces and held serve to the finish once he went ahead in the second set.
  • The turning point: Djokovic double-faulted in the fourth game of the second set to hand Hurkacz a 3-1 lead, and the Pole served it out from there.
  • Fitness: Djokovic was seen hunched over and squatting between points, AFP reported. He has struggled with his fitness in recent months.

From a title to a first-match exit in three days

The result is a sharp turn from last weekend. Djokovic won the China Open in Beijing three days earlier, the 102nd title of his career,. Instead his Asian swing ends in his opening match, and the questions about how much tennis his body has left at 39 will grow louder ahead of the indoor events that close the season.

What is next in Shanghai

Hurkacz goes on to the third round, where he will play either Lorenzo Musetti of Italy or the Chinese wildcard Zhou Yi. Shanghai is three hours ahead of Pakistan, so most matches finish by evening here.
