Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat in Serbia's snap parliamentary election, saying the student-led list has won. Early projections by Ipsos and CeSID gave the "Student List: Students Win" about 52% of the vote against 39.3% for Vucic's SNS-led coalition, Xinhua reported. The concession came around 2am Monday, Pakistan time.

"Based on the stratified sample, it is clear that we have lost these elections," Vucic told supporters at his Belgrade headquarters, according to Xinhua and Euronews. Final official results were not yet out.

A majority in Serbia's 250-seat parliament is 126, so on Vucic's own numbers the students can govern alone. About 6.45 million people were eligible to vote, at 8,392 polling stations, with 18 lists on the ballot.

The end of 14 years of SNS rule

Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party has run Serbia since 2012. Vucic resigned as president on 27 September to run for parliament, and a new presidential election must be held by the end of December, Xinhua said. He said his movement would stay united and work from the opposition benches, and called the result a "verification of a revolution", again blaming foreign support for the protests.

Who won

The Student List is formally headed by Novi Sad professor Ilija Srdanovic and ran on institutional reform and fighting corruption. Its candidate Radomir Saicic, a University of Belgrade professor, said: "Tonight the voice of the people is heard," and asked supporters to celebrate peacefully.

Why Serbia voted

The movement grew out of almost two years of anti-corruption protests and university blockades that began after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. The station is on the Belgrade to Budapest line, a project Vucic championed.

What changes now

Euronews expects the new government to face early tests on the courts, corruption, public media and Serbia's EU bid, and on how it balances ties with Brussels, Washington, Moscow and Beijing. Vucic kept close ties with China and Russia during his years in power.
