Trump announces Russia-Ukraine 'energy ceasefire' effective immediately, but neither side confirms it

The post came hours after Zelensky refused to stop refinery strikes on his own. Kyiv says it is ready if Moscow stops hitting Ukraine's power grid.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday 11 October 2026 that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire" effective immediately, a halt to attacks on each other's energy sites, but neither Moscow nor Kyiv had confirmed it, Business Recorder reported from Reuters. "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" Trump wrote on Truth Social, giving no terms or duration.

What Kyiv says

  • Zelensky told Axios that Trump's post was the first he had heard of a deal.
  • A senior Ukrainian official told Reuters that Ukraine was ready to agree if Russia was.
  • Zelensky's condition: Ukraine stops hitting Russian refineries only if Moscow stops striking Ukraine's power infrastructure, with "real guarantees".
  • Russia had not responded publicly by Sunday night.

Trump announced a similar energy truce in mid-September, and neither side confirmed that one either.

A weekend of rows

The announcement capped a bruising two days between Washington and Kyiv. On Saturday Trump told Zelensky to stop attacking Russian refineries and said Ukrainians should replace him in an election (our report). He also announced a US deal to buy Russian diesel, which Zelensky condemned. On ABC on Sunday, Zelensky said Ukraine would hold elections if Putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, since Ukrainian law bars voting under martial law.

Why it matters in Pakistan

Fuel is the link. Diesel prices are high, which Reuters linked to the Iran war, and Russian refineries have been a main Ukrainian target. Analysts quoted by Reuters said the US-Russia diesel volumes were too small to bring prices down for long, and crude was about $92 a barrel on 9 October. Pakistan imports most of its oil, so any lasting calm in energy attacks would feed through only slowly, via the fortnightly OGRA review.

We will update this story if Moscow or Kyiv confirms the truce.
