OKLA has not yet published battery capacity, range or top speed figures for the Pakistan models. We will add them here the day the company puts a specification sheet on its Pakistan pages, and we do not print numbers a maker has not stated.

Where this sits against petrol

The cheapest OKLA at Rs 199,000 is below a Honda CD 70, and the ORBIT at Rs 225,000 sits under the Honda CG 125. The Honda CG 150 went up Rs 10,000 this week to Rs 459,900, which puts three OKLA models under it.

The running cost is where electric two wheelers make their case. Petrol is Rs 389.14 a litre from midnight. A 70cc bike doing 45 kilometres to the litre costs about Rs 8.65 per kilometre in fuel. A typical electric scooter drawing about 2 units of electricity per 100 kilometres costs roughly Rs 1 per kilometre at a domestic tariff of around Rs 50 a unit, before the fuel charges adjustment that CPPA has just asked NEPRA to approve.

On a 40 kilometre daily commute, that is about Rs 346 a day on petrol against roughly Rs 40 on electricity. Over 25 working days, about Rs 8,650 against Rs 1,000.

That gap is the entire argument. Run your own numbers with the fuel cost calculator and check what the charging adds to your bill on the electricity bill calculator.

What to check before you buy

The things that decide whether an electric two wheeler is a good buy in Pakistan are not on the price list.

  • Battery warranty in years and in charge cycles. The battery is the most expensive part and the first thing to fail. Ask for the replacement price in writing.
  • Charging time and whether the battery is removable. A removable battery you can carry to a second floor flat is worth more than a slightly longer range.
  • Registration and token tax. Electric two wheelers are registered like any other vehicle. Check what you will pay on the token tax calculator and the vehicle transfer fee calculator.
  • Service network in your city. A new brand with nine models and few workshops is a risk a Honda buyer does not take.

The electric two wheeler market here is getting crowded fast. A self driving electric scooter was also unveiled in Pakistan this week. Prices are moving, so check the maker's own page before you pay.
