Why the profit more than doubled
PSO put it down to higher sales volumes and a better product mix. Its petroleum sales grew 17.8% while the whole industry grew 7.1%, so the state-owned marketer took a bigger slice of the market: 45.9%, 4.2 percentage points more than a year ago. Diesel is the clearest sign. PSO sold 12.8% more high-speed diesel even though national diesel demand shrank, according to the company.
Chief executive Jawwad Ahmed Cheema said PSO grew at more than twice the market's pace while keeping fuel available during a period of serious regional supply disruption, a reference to the war around the Strait of Hormuz that has squeezed Gulf cargoes.
How PSO kept supply going
During the quarter PSO imported 16 cargoes of petroleum products, 756,000 tonnes in all, and lifted 1.019 million tonnes of petrol and diesel from local refineries, ProPakistani reported. It also manages Pakistan's long-term LNG supply portfolio, which it said it kept running for the power and gas sectors while a supplier was under force majeure.
After the quarter ended, PSO signed a government-to-government sale and purchase agreement with Oman's OQ Trading, adding another source of fuel for Pakistan.
The company added 37 petrol pumps in the quarter, taking its network to 3,727 sites, and now has electric vehicle chargers at 16 locations.
What it means for you
For drivers, nothing changes at the pump: petrol and diesel prices are set by the government every fortnight, not by PSO. Today's PSO ex-depot Karachi prices, read from PSO's own price page, are on our petrol price and diesel price pages, and you can work out what a month of driving costs with the fuel cost calculator.
For shareholders, the result lands as the KSE-100 trades near record levels. The statement did not mention a dividend for the quarter.
