West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on Saturday and lead the two-match series 1-0. Chasing 170, they finished on 170 for 2 in 35.1 overs on day four, through rain and bad-light stoppages.

Scores

  • Bangladesh: 272 and 142
  • West Indies: 245 and 170 for 2
  • Result: West Indies won by 8 wickets
  • Player of the match: Jomel Warrican (9 wickets)

The chase

Opener Brandon King made a career-best 81 not out off 115 balls, with 10 fours and a six. He was dropped on 70 and made Bangladesh pay. John Campbell made a quick 49 off 55 before Shoriful Islam bowled him.

How Bangladesh collapsed

Bangladesh resumed on 79 for 6, 106 ahead. Captain Roston Chase took 5 for 36, his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests, and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican added 4 for 63 to his first-innings five, finishing with nine in the match.

Jaker Ali (22) fell to Warrican, caught by Chase. Chase then removed Taijul Islam to leave Bangladesh 127 for 9. Nayeem Hasan made a maiden Test fifty, 52 off 91 balls after being dropped on 21 and 29, before Joshua Bishop caught him off Chase.

What the captains said

"The guys were determined, even though we didn't have a good start in the first innings," Chase said, Al Jazeera reported. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said: "All three departments didn't do well, especially in the field."

What it means

West Indies trailed by 27 on first innings after Shadman Islam's 105 and still won with more than a day to spare. The result earns West Indies World Test Championship 2025-27 points, the same table Pakistan are chasing, and leaves Bangladesh needing to win in Sylhet to draw the series.
