India beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in 1st ODI at Eden Park as Kohli hits 74 off 51
Arshdeep Singh's four wickets bowled New Zealand out for 185, and Virat Kohli raced to a 35-ball fifty in a rain-reduced chase that India finished with 56 balls to spare.

India beat New Zealand by five wickets in the first ODI at Eden Park, Auckland, on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Chasing a rain-revised target of 143 in 32 overs, India got home with 56 balls left, with Virat Kohli making 74 off 51 balls, ARY News reported.
Scorecard in brief
- New Zealand: 185 all out in the 41st over (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34 off 23, Glenn Phillips 30, Daryl Mitchell 28; Arshdeep Singh 4-70, Gurnoor Brar 3-44).
- India: reached a DLS target of 143 in 32 overs with 56 balls to spare (Virat Kohli 74 off 51, Shubman Gill 37 off 56; Jacob Duffy 3 wickets).
- Result: India won by five wickets (DLS). Series: India lead 1-0.
How it went
India won the toss and bowled after a short shower delayed the start by 10 minutes. Arshdeep and Brar shared seven wickets, and New Zealand were in trouble long before their last pair added useful runs. Tickner, batting at No. 11, hit 34 off 23 balls to lift the total past 180. Seifert opened in place of Devon Conway, who was concussed.
India lost Rohit Sharma for a duck, but Kohli and Gill put on 113 for the second wicket. Rain stopped play twice, first in the 11th over with India on 54 for 1 and again at the end of the 12th, and the target was cut to 143 from 32 overs.
Kohli reached his fifty in 35 balls, his 80th in ODIs, and hit 13 fours and a six. Duffy took three wickets late on, but the chase was never in doubt.
What it means
This is the first of five ODIs after New Zealand won the T20I leg 3-2 (5th T20I report). New Zealand are already without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman for the ODIs (squad news), and a Conway concussion would stretch their top order further.
Next match
The second ODI is in Wellington on Saturday, 7 November. New Zealand is eight hours ahead of Pakistan, so an afternoon start in Wellington means a very early morning in Pakistan time.
