Pakistan vs England 2026: Buttler out injured, ODIs in Rawalpindi 20 Oct and Lahore 25 Oct

Updated Monday 28 September 2026. Jos Buttler will miss England's tour of Pakistan. The 36-year-old hurt his hamstring in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley, where he retired hurt and came back to bat, and sat out Sunday's series decider at The Oval. "Jos won't be in Pakistan," England's white-ball coach Brendon McCullum said, adding that it was hard to judge how long he would be out; ESPNcricinfo also reports him as a doubt for England's next series in Australia. Jordan Cox, who made 76 off 52 balls on his ODI return against Sri Lanka, is expected to keep wicket, ARY News reported.

Pakistan vs England is back in Pakistan in October: the two sides meet twice in an ODI tri-series with Sri Lanka, on Tuesday 20 October at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and Sunday 25 October at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, with the final in Lahore on Saturday 31 October. Pakistan vs England 2026 schedule

The rest of the tri-series: Pakistan v Sri Lanka on 18 October (Rawalpindi) and 27 October (Lahore); Sri Lanka v England on 22 October (Rawalpindi) and 29 October (Lahore). Each team plays the other two twice, and the top two meet in the final. The PCB announced the series in August as part of a home season running from 9 October to 21 November, Dawn reported.

England away, later: the PCB's approved 2026-27 plan also includes a Pakistan tour of England for five ODIs and a red-ball match. Dates have not been announced; they will go on this page and on our Pakistan cricket schedule 2026-27 when they are.

Why these two matches matter

The 2027 ODI World Cup is a year away, and both teams are still picking their 50-over sides. For Pakistan, two games against England at home are the best test available before then. The Sri Lanka T20Is from 9 October come first (Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 2026), and the men's team is at the Asian Games, where they reached the semi-final (Thursday 1 October, 5am PKT) after their quarter-final against Hong Kong was washed out (Asian Games cricket).

England's form coming in

England swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in a home T20I series this month and then took the ODI series 2-1, winning the decider at The Oval on Sunday 27 September by 223 runs after Tom Banton's maiden ODI century. That is the side Pakistan face in Rawalpindi, minus Buttler, who has become the first England batter to pass 10,000 runs across ODIs and T20Is. Live scores in our match centre.
