Tilak Varma run out walking off a 'four' that wasn't: India still beat West Indies by 14 runs to lead 2-1
Pooran's dive kept the ball in play and Motie ran Tilak out at the non-striker's end as Gambhir fumed in the dugout. Abhishek Sharma's 69 off 30 set up 223 in Indore.
Tilak Varma was run out in one of the strangest dismissals of the season during the third T20I between India and West Indies at the Holkar Stadium, Indore, on Sunday, 11 October, after both batters assumed the ball had crossed the boundary. India still won by 14 runs to go 2-1 up in the five-match series.
How it happened
It was the fourth ball of the 17th over. Gudakesh Motie bowled a low full toss on the pads, and Axar Patel flicked it towards deep backward square leg. Kamil Pooran dived and kept the ball inside the rope.
Axar and Tilak, believing it was four, began strolling to their ends. Pooran's return reached Motie, who broke the stumps at the non-striker's end. Axar had made his ground; Tilak, India's vice-captain, was well short. The third umpire confirmed the ball had never touched the rope, and head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen visibly angry in the dugout, ARY News reported.
Under the Laws of Cricket the ball stays live until it is dead or the umpire signals a boundary, so the batters were fair game.
