Why gold fell

The local rate follows the international price in dollars, converted at the rupee rate. The world price lost $108 an ounce on the day, and the rupee was steady at about Rs 276.75 to the dollar, so almost all of the drop came from abroad. The fall comes in a week of heavy selling across global markets, with technology stocks and crypto also lower after the Binance hack.

What it means for you

  • Buying for a wedding: a 5-tola set is about Rs 79,500 cheaper in bullion terms than on Thursday (5 x Rs 15,900), before making charges.
  • Selling old jewellery: buyers deduct for purity and wastage, so check the carat first. Our gold converter turns grams into tolas and works out 22K and 21K values from the 24K rate.
  • Zakat: the gold nisab is 7.5 tolas. At Saturday's rate that is about Rs 3,073,020. Use the zakat calculator to see whether your savings and jewellery cross the line.

Gold has swung by thousands of rupees a day all month, so a single day's drop is no guarantee of the next. See the daily 24-carat gold price history on our data page.
