Gold rate today: 24k falls Rs 3,800 to Rs 453,436 a tola, silver down Rs 73

Gold fell in Pakistan on Thursday, 17 September 2026. The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association put 24 karat gold at Rs 453,436 per tola, down Rs 3,800 on the day.

Internationally, spot gold slipped $38 to $4,309 per troy ounce.

Why it fell

Two things. The US Federal Reserve raised rates on Wednesday, its first increase since 2023, and higher US rates make a non-yielding asset like gold less attractive to hold. Then came profit taking after a run that had pushed the tola rate up Rs 7,900 in a single session on 16 September.

That is the pattern to keep in mind. The 16 September jump and the 17 September fall together net out to gold being up about Rs 4,100 over two days. A one-day headline in either direction is noise.

What it means if you are buying

A drop of Rs 3,800 on a tola is about 0.8 percent. On a 10 tola purchase that is Rs 38,000 saved against yesterday, which is real money, but it is small against the spread you pay at the counter.

The number that actually decides what you pay is not the association rate. It is the association rate plus making charges (wastage or banwai), which on ornamental jewellery in Pakistan commonly runs 8 to 20 percent depending on the design and the shop. On a Rs 453,436 tola, a 12 percent making charge is Rs 54,412. That single line dwarfs a Rs 3,800 move in the rate.

Ask for the making charge as a rupee figure before you agree, not a percentage, and ask whether it is refundable if you sell back to the same shop.

What it means if you are selling

Shops typically buy back at below the association rate and do not return making charges. If you are selling old jewellery, get quotes from at least two dealers and take the karat tested in front of you.

Zakat

Gold is one of the assets zakat is due on, and the rate you use is the market value on your zakat date, not what you paid. At Rs 453,436 a tola, the nisab threshold on gold alone (7.5 tola) works out to roughly Rs 3.4 million, while the silver nisab (52.5 tola at Rs 6,869) is about Rs 360,600. Most scholars in Pakistan apply the silver nisab, which is why far more people cross the threshold than expect to.
