The petrol price in Pakistan falls by Rs 3.93 a litre to Rs 386.30 from Saturday 17 October, according to the notification issued by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Friday evening, as reported by ARY News. High-speed diesel is unchanged at Rs 396.96 a litre.

Dawn reported that the new rates apply from Saturday 17 October to Monday 19 October. It is the second cut in two days: on Friday petrol had already come down Rs 3.63 to Rs 390.23.

What a tank costs now

For your own monthly bill, put your distance and mileage into the fuel cost calculator. Every reading since March is on the petrol price page, and diesel on the diesel price page.

Why prices now move every few days

The government moved from fortnightly reviews to weekly revisions in March, after the US-Iran war began, and in July the petroleum minister said prices would be set daily in line with world oil markets, Dawn reported. That is why the pump price has changed several times this month.

The cut comes even as world crude climbed again: Brent touched $110 a barrel on Friday for the first time since May, CNBC reported, so the next revision may not be as kind.

Petrol still carries about Rs 114 a litre in taxes and duties, and diesel about Rs 100, according to Dawn. Petrol peaked at Rs 458.41 on 3 April.

The Rs 100 relief still applies

Under the Petrol Relief Scheme, motorcycle and chingchi rickshaw owners get Rs 100 off a litre on up to 20 litres a month, and owners of vehicles up to 800cc on up to 30 litres a month, ARY News reported.

  1. Register by sending an SMS to 9771 with REG, your CNIC number, your vehicle registration number, the first word of your province's name and the registration date.
  2. Wait for the confirmation SMS.
  3. Before you go to the pump, send TOK to 9771 to get a token number.
  4. Show the token at the pump to buy at the discounted price.

On a bike, 20 litres at the relief price works out to Rs 5,726 instead of Rs 7,726 at the full price.

What it means for you

The cut is small, about Rs 4 a litre, but it is the second in two days. Transporters on diesel get nothing this time, so freight and intercity fares are unlikely to move.
