Keanu Reeves signs to voice John Wick in animated prequel about the 'Impossible Task'

Keanu Reeves has closed a deal to return as John Wick in Lionsgate's animated prequel, Variety reported on Thursday 5 November. It is the first time the character will appear in an animated feature, and Reeves will also produce.

The story: the 'Impossible Task'

The film goes back to the part of Wick's life that the live-action films only talk about. It follows the hitman as he completes the Impossible Task, killing all of his rivals in a single night, to free himself from his obligation to the High Table, the crime council that runs the films' underworld, and earn the right to a life with his future wife, Helen.

Fans first heard about the task in the original 2014 film, when gangster Viggo Tarasov describes it to his son. Lionsgate's film chief Adam Fogelson said when the project was announced in 2025 that it was the story fans were "clamoring for" most.

Who is making it

• Director: Shannon Tindle, best known for Netflix's Ultraman: Rising and for Kubo and the Two Strings.
• Writers: Ryan and Kaz Firpo.
• Producers: the series' regular team, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road and Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, with Reeves and the company Point Grey.

No release date or studio animation partner has been announced.

A billion-dollar series that keeps growing

The five John Wick films, including last year's Ana de Armas spin-off Ballerina, have taken more than $1 billion at the global box office, according to Variety. That is roughly Rs 277 billion at today's dollar rate. Lionsgate also has a fifth live-action John Wick in development and a standalone film about Caine, the blind assassin played by Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4.
