Gold up Rs 2,265 to Rs 457,555 and the dollar at Rs 278.63 this morning

The rupee

The dollar move is half a percent in one reading, which is the largest single step the pair has taken this month on our series. Full history is on the dollar rate page.

If you send money home, this is the right side of the move. A remittance of SAR 5,000 from Riyadh is worth Rs 371,500 at 74.30, against Rs 369,650 at Friday's 73.93. That is Rs 1,850 more for the same riyals. From Dubai, AED 5,000 comes to Rs 379,350, up Rs 1,900. From the UK, GBP 1,000 is Rs 372,530, up Rs 1,840.

Gold

At Rs 457,555 a tola, 24K works out to about Rs 392,279 per 10 grams. The international price was quoted at $4,378 an ounce on Saturday, and the local rate tracks that plus the rupee, which is why a weak rupee and a firm ounce price push the tola up twice over. For zakat, the thresholds move with these numbers. Nisab on gold is 7.5 tola, which is Rs 3,431,663 at today's 24K rate. Nisab on silver is 52.5 tola, which is Rs 364,140. Most scholars in Pakistan apply the silver nisab because it brings more people into the obligation, so the working threshold this morning is Rs 364,140 of net zakatable wealth. Crypto

Bitcoin is at $81,145 and ether at $2,620.48, both down on the day, bitcoin by $585 and ether by roughly $25. These are the overnight readings; our crypto feed was rate limited on the later pass, so treat them as of around 1:15am Pakistan time. Live prices are on the bitcoin price page.

For a Pakistani holder, the rupee move partly offsets the dollar fall. Bitcoin at $81,145 and Rs 278.63 comes to Rs 22.61 million a coin, against Rs 22.66 million on Friday's numbers, so the drop in rupee terms is about a quarter of a percent rather than the 0.7 percent it is in dollars.

What to watch this week

The policy rate is at 11.5 percent and 12-month KIBOR was last recorded at 12.34 percent. Petrol is Rs 389.14 and diesel Rs 424.04, both unchanged in the latest reading. The next OGRA fortnightly review falls at the end of the month.
