VIX jumps 21.5% to 19.99 as Wall Street falls; history says Friday's fear fades by Monday
Bitcoin held above $80,000 over the weekend and its volatility barely moved. Here is what that means for Monday's open in New York and on the PSX.

Wall Street's fear gauge, the VIX, jumped 21.5% to 19.99 on Friday as the S&P 500 fell 1.09%, its biggest one-day rise since 5 June, but history and a calm bitcoin market suggest the scare may fade when trading reopens on Monday, CoinDesk reported on Sunday, 18 October 2026. US markets open at 6:30pm Pakistan time on Monday.
Week ahead: the numbers that matter
| VIX (Friday close) | 19.99, up 21.5% |
| S&P 500 (Friday) | down 1.09% |
| Bitcoin (Sunday) | about $81,116, roughly Rs 2.25 crore |
| Bitcoin volatility (BVIV) | just under 40%, little changed |
| KSE-100 (latest close) | 166,419.71 points |
Stocks were hit by worries over artificial intelligence companies, where the cost of insuring their debt against default has reached record highs, and by geopolitics. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, pushing oil higher, and fighting on the Russia-Ukraine front appears to be picking up.
What VIX history says about Monday
The VIX measures how much traders expect the S&P 500 to swing over the next four weeks, worked out from options prices. When investors get nervous they buy protection, and the index rises.
CoinDesk's count since January 1990 found 32 earlier Fridays when the VIX jumped 20% or more. On the following Monday it fell 25 times and rose seven times, with a typical drop of 4.5%. A month later it was lower in 25 of the 32 cases, by a median 16%. Season helps too: the VIX has fallen in November in 25 of the last 36 years.
Not everyone is betting on calm. CNBC reported that traders paid about $1.7 million for 9,200 VIX call options at a 20 strike expiring on 18 November, and $1.1 million for 12,500 calls at 23, a bet that fear stays high into late November. In seven of the 32 past cases, including August 2015, February 2018 and August 2024, the VIX kept climbing on Monday.
Bitcoin as the weekend signal
Bitcoin is the one big market that trades through the weekend, so traders watch it for an early read on Monday. It has held above $80,000, inside its recent range, and its own volatility index has barely moved since Friday. On Polymarket, bettors put the chance of the AI bubble bursting this year at about 9%.
What it means for the PSX on Monday
The Pakistan Stock Exchange opens on Monday morning, hours before New York, with the KSE-100 at 166,419.71 points at its latest close. Oil is the link to watch: a higher crude price after the Hormuz tanker fires would weigh on Pakistan's import bill and the rupee, now at Rs 276.91 to the dollar. Track the index on our KSE-100 page, bitcoin in rupees on the bitcoin page, and the dollar rate through the day.
None of this guarantees a quiet week: past patterns are a guide, not a promise.
