Islamabad Police new leave rules: a guaranteed weekly off for every officer, one month marriage leave for women

Islamabad police new leave rules issued by the Inspector General on 23 October 2026 guarantee every officer and official at least one day of weekly rest, which does not count as leave, Dawn reported after seeing the order. The News also reported the policy. Dawn said this is the first time all personnel of the force have been guaranteed a weekly off.

The order replaces all earlier instructions, including the 2022 leave policy, and hands leave-sanctioning powers down to officers at different levels so that requests do not all wait at the top.

The main rules

Maternity, paternity and medical leave are also covered, with the sanctioning officer set by rank. All of it is subject to approval by the competent authority.

Officers from far-off districts

Personnel whose homes are in remote districts of Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan and the former FATA, can choose one of three options instead of the weekly off:

1. One day of rest every week.
2. Seven days of rest after every 45 days of duty.
3. Fourteen days of rest after every 90 days of duty.

This matters for constables who need two days just to travel home and back.

The fine print

The order says leave cannot be claimed as a right: a senior officer can refuse or cancel it in the department's interest or because of official needs. It was drafted after consulting officers of different ranks, and suggestions are invited through the proper channel.
