Fenerbahce vs Liverpool finished 3-2 in Istanbul on Wednesday night, ending Liverpool's perfect start in this season's Champions League league phase. Andoni Iraola's side led twice, through Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak, and held each lead for only four minutes.

Fenerbahce 3-2 Liverpool

  • 25' Trey Nyoni, 19, scored his first professional goal with a deflected volley.
  • 29' Mason Greenwood's free-kick deflected in off Jeremy Jacquet: 1-1.
  • 69' Isak headed in Cody Gakpo's cross with his first touch off the bench: 1-2.
  • 73' Archie Brown tapped in at the back post after Gakpo's header went past Alisson: 2-2.
  • 79' Vedat Muriqi headed the winner.

All three Fenerbahce goals came from set-pieces, the BBC noted, and it was the latest Liverpool have ever gone ahead in a major European game and then lost. Fenerbahce, managed on an interim basis by former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt, won in the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008, UEFA said. Iraola called the goals "cheap" and "messy". Liverpool have now lost twice in four days, after Sunday's defeat at Arsenal.
