Manchester City 2-2 Brighton, City win 4-3 on penalties. The holders came from behind twice at the Etihad on Wednesday night (the early hours of Thursday in Pakistan) and then needed two saves from backup goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli in the shootout to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, Al Jazeera reported from AFP and AP.

How the game went

Enzo Maresca made nine changes after Saturday's league defeat at Aston Villa, which ended City's perfect start to the Premier League season. Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson and Gianluigi Donnarumma began on the bench or were rested.

  • 30 min, 0-1: Malick Yalcouye turned Georginio Rutter's shot past Rulli from five yards.
  • 50 min, 1-1: Mateo Kovacic curled in from 25 yards.
  • 47 min, 1-2: Rutter put Brighton back in front two minutes after the break, finishing Jaouen Hadjam's cut-back.
  • 72 min, 2-2: Vitor Reis deflected Rayan Cherki's free kick into the net.

The shootout

City fell behind when Jason Steele saved Kovacic's fourth penalty. Rulli then saved from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, and City went through 4-3. It meant City avoided the fate of Arsenal, who were knocked out on penalties by League Two Fleetwood on Tuesday (our report).

The two sides meet again at the Etihad in the Premier League on Saturday.
