Wuhan Open 2026: injured Swiatek loses semi-final to Maja Chwalinska, who meets Sonay Kartal in Sunday's final
Swiatek led 5-3 before a left thigh injury, then lost 5-7, 1-6 to her fellow Pole. Britain's Kartal, ranked 170, beat Ostapenko in two tie-breaks.

Iga Swiatek is out of the Wuhan Open after losing her semi-final 5-7, 1-6 to fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska on Saturday, while carrying a left leg injury, Reuters reported via Business Recorder. Chwalinska will play Britain's Sonay Kartal in the final.
How Swiatek's semi-final went wrong
Swiatek led 5-3 in the first set before calling a medical timeout. She played on with her left thigh strapped but struggled to move and return, and Chwalinska won seven of the next eight games to take the set and then ran away with the second.
Swiatek's physio, Maciej Ryszczuk, wrote on X: "I told her three times to stop the match because it was a risk to her health."
"She is a great champion, living legend," Chwalinska said of her opponent.
Kartal's run continues
In the other semi-final, Kartal beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(9), 7-6(5). Kartal came into the week ranked No 170 in the world, and has now reached a WTA 1000 final. "At times she is unplayable and sometimes you just have to ride the wave," she said of Ostapenko.
