US midterm elections 2026: results start 4am Wednesday Pakistan time, with House and Senate at stake
Americans vote on Tuesday 3 November for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governors. Here is when the results land in Pakistan and which races decide control of Congress.

The US midterm elections are on Tuesday 3 November 2026, and the first results reach Pakistan before dawn on Wednesday 4 November. The first polls close at 6pm Eastern time, which is 4am PKT, and the biggest wave of states closes at 6am PKT, Al Jazeera and election schedules show. US clocks go back on Sunday 1 November, so from then the US East Coast is 10 hours behind Pakistan.
Results timetable in Pakistan time
| Polls close (US Eastern) | Pakistan time, Wed 4 Nov | Main states |
|---|---|---|
| 6pm | 4am | First closings in Indiana and Kentucky |
| 7pm | 5am | Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Vermont, most of Florida |
| 7:30pm | 5:30am | North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia |
| 8pm | 6am | About two dozen states including Pennsylvania, Texas, Maine, New Hampshire, most of Michigan |
| 9pm | 7am | New York, Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado |
| 10pm | 8am | Nevada, Montana, Utah |
| 11pm | 9am | California, Washington |
| 1am Wed | 11am | Last closings in Alaska |
Georgia and Virginia are usually the first big signals, around 5am PKT. By 9am PKT about a third of the country has reported. California counts mail ballots slowly, so close House races there can take days.
What is at stake
- House of Representatives: all 435 seats. Republicans hold 218, Democrats 214, with one independent sitting with Republicans and two seats vacant. Democrats need a net gain of three for a majority.
- Senate: 35 of 100 seats (33 regular races plus specials in Florida and Ohio). Republicans hold 53, Democrats 45 plus two independents. Democrats need a net gain of four; Republicans keep control at 50-50 because Vice President JD Vance breaks ties.
- Governors: 36 states.
About 210 million Americans are registered to vote, and more than 43 million had voted early by the end of last week.
Races to watch
- Georgia: Jon Ossoff (D) against Mike Collins (R). If nobody gets a majority, it goes to a runoff on 1 December.
- Michigan (open): Abdul El-Sayed (D) against Mike Rogers (R).
- Maine: Susan Collins (R) against Troy Jackson (D).
- North Carolina (open): Roy Cooper (D) against Michael Whatley (R).
- New Hampshire (open): Chris Pappas (D) against John Sununu (R).
A Pew survey from 28 September to 4 October found 44% of registered voters backing the Democrat in their district and 36% the Republican, with 15% unsure.
Read early results carefully
Republicans have tended to vote by mail less often, so early counts in some states can lean Republican before mail ballots move the totals, a pattern known as the "red mirage". The new Congress is sworn in on 3 January 2027.
Why it matters here
The vote decides whether President Trump keeps a friendly Congress for his last two years, which shapes US tariffs, aid and policy on Iran, issues that move oil prices and the rupee. Our dollar rate page tracks the rupee daily, and this page will carry the results as they come in.
