'Maxxing' is Dictionary.com's Word of the Year 2026, beating 'unc' and 'data center'
From looksmaxxing to tokenmaxxing and nonnamaxxing, the internet suffix for doing something to the max won. Here is what it means and the words it beat.
Dictionary.com has named "maxxing" its Word of the Year for 2026. In its announcement, the dictionary defines it as "pursuing an activity to the fullest or optimizing a certain aspect of your life", and says it can be used on its own or tacked onto almost any other word. ProPakistani reported the choice on Tuesday.
The numbers behind it
Dictionary.com found that "maxxing" words appeared in digital media in August 2026 nearly 19 times more often than in an average month of 2025, Forbes reported, and use of "looksmaxxing" alone was up about ninefold. Searches for "looksmaxxing" jumped early in the year after media coverage, and searches for plain "maxxing" kept climbing through the year, the dictionary said.
Pakistan is part of that trend: Semrush estimates about 1,600 searches a month in Pakistan for "looksmaxxing".
Where the word comes from
The editors trace it to "max" and "maximum", and to the gamer term min-maxing (building a character to be as strong as possible). It started on Reddit and other forums; archived posts show "looksmaxxing" in use since at least 2015, before it spread to TikTok, Instagram and X. Dictionary.com called it a reflection of "a culture that increasingly values optimization".
The maxxing words you will see online
