TikTok ban in Pakistan? PTA says viral notification is fake, no ban ordered
A notification claiming TikTok had been blocked spread on WhatsApp and X on Thursday. The telecom regulator says it never issued it, and the app is working normally.
There is no TikTok ban in Pakistan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said on Thursday, 5 November 2026, that a notification circulating on social media claiming the video app had been blocked is fake, and that it has issued no such order.
"PTA clarifies that no such notification has been issued, and the circulating information is false and misleading," the regulator said in a post on X, as reported by Dawn. It asked people not to share unverified documents and to rely only on PTA's own website and verified accounts.
What was going around
The document, styled as an official PTA letter, was shared widely on WhatsApp groups and X on Thursday morning, with captions telling users the app would stop working. TikTok was working normally on mobile data and broadband in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad at the time of PTA's statement, and no internet service provider had been told to block it.
Why people believed it
Pakistan has blocked TikTok before, so a fake ban notice is easy to believe:
- October 2020: PTA blocked the app over "immoral and indecent" content, then lifted the block about 10 days later after TikTok promised to remove such accounts.
- July 2021: it was blocked again for failing to take down content PTA objected to.
- August 2021: the Islamabad High Court questioned PTA's power to impose a blanket ban, and asked it to work out a proper mechanism with the government.
- November 2021: the ban was lifted after TikTok gave fresh assurances on content moderation.
Since then the app has stayed open and now cooperates with PTA on takedowns: it removed more than 23 million videos in Pakistan between April and June this year, most of them before any user reported them.
How to check a PTA notice yourself
- Open pta.gov.pk and look under the media and press releases section. A real blocking order or policy notice is posted there or on PTA's verified X account (@PTAofficialpk).
- Check the reference number and date. Fake letters often copy an old letterhead with a wrong date or a signature that does not match.
- Look for the same news on two national outlets. A real ban of a major app is reported by Dawn, Geo or Express Tribune within minutes.
- If you cannot verify it, do not forward it. PTA has repeatedly warned that sharing fake official documents can itself be an offence under the cybercrime law.
What it means for you
Nothing changes: TikTok, TikTok Lite and creator payouts carry on as before. If the app does not load for you, the cause is your connection or the app itself, not a government block. You can also check which SIMs are on your CNIC and keep your accounts safe with our guide to checking SIMs registered on your CNIC, and work out the tax on your mobile top-ups with the mobile load tax calculator.
