England beat Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20 international at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday. Captain Harry Brook made an unbeaten 114 off 49 balls, Jos Buttler added 80 off 44, and England piled up 254 for 4. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 135 in 19 overs.

For Pakistan fans, this is the England white-ball side that beat Pakistan by two wickets in February to reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals. England's Test team has just beaten Pakistan 3-0 at home.

How the innings was built

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl. It did not work.

  • Buttler set the pace at the top with 8 fours and 3 sixes before Wanindu Hasaranga had him caught.
  • Brook hit 10 fours and 6 sixes and was still there at the end.
  • Will Jacks chipped in with 21 off 12.
  • Debutant Donald made 12 off 5 balls before falling to Dunith Wellalage.

Sri Lanka's bowlers conceded 17 extras, including 11 wides. Dushmantha Chameera went for 53 in his four overs, and Wellalage for 51 in three.

The chase that never started

Olly Baker took 3 for 12 in four overs, including a maiden, and bowled out two of the top three. Overton and Dawson took two wickets each. Wellalage top-scored with 33 off 21, and Dasun Shanaka made 24 off 14, but Sri Lanka never got near the rate.

What it means for Pakistan

  • The bar for a big total keeps rising. England scored 254 while losing only four wickets. Any attack that wants to compete with this side needs control in the powerplay and at the death, where Sri Lanka leaked 11 wides.
  • Pace and control won the second innings. Baker's 12 runs in four overs was the difference between a contest and a rout, the kind of spell Pakistan's quicks are asked for in every T20.
  • Brook is the batter to plan for. England's white-ball captain batted through the innings and scored at more than two runs a ball.

What comes next

The tour has three T20Is and three ODIs and runs until 27 September. Follow Pakistan's own schedule in our T20 World Cup record and what comes next and the women's side at the Asian Games.
