Sri Lanka beat England by 2 wickets in Rawalpindi on Thursday 22 October, chasing 430 after Harry Brook's 202, the second-highest successful chase in ODI history. Only South Africa's 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 is bigger, ARY News reported. Janith Liyanage won it with a six off the penultimate ball and finished on 61 not out off 27.

Earlier, Harry Brook made 202 off 116 balls against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the fastest double century in ODI history and the first by an England batter. He reached 200 off 114 balls, three fewer than the 117 Shubman Gill needed against West Indies last month, and carried England to 429 for 4, the highest ODI total ever made in Pakistan, BBC Sport reported.

It came two days after Pakistan beat England by 87 runs on the same ground, and it changes the look of the Pakistan ODI tri-series before England meet Pakistan again in Lahore on Sunday.

Brook started slowly, with 13 runs from his first 24 balls, then accelerated. He added 159 for the third wicket with Joe Root (69) and 185 off 79 balls for the fifth wicket with Will Jacks, who reached 50 off 25 balls and finished on 66 not out. England scored 156 in the last 10 overs. Tom Banton made 50 at the top.

Brook passed Stokes's England record with a six off a Dilshan Madushanka full toss, was dropped at mid-off on 185, and began the final over, from Janith Liyanage, on 186. He hit the first ball for six, ran two twos and reached 200 with a paddle sweep for four before he was caught at third man off the last ball of the innings.

The records he broke

It is the 14th double century in men's ODIs and the 12th-highest score. BBC Sport counts it as the highest ODI score by a batter who did not open, and the fourth-highest by a captain. Across formats, Brook is now only the second man after Chris Gayle with a T20I hundred, an ODI double hundred and a Test triple hundred; the triple was his 317 in Multan in 2024.

Pakistan has been good to him: he averages more than 80 in six Tests here with four hundreds.

How Sri Lanka chased 430

England's new-ball bowlers had Sri Lanka at 24 for 2 inside five overs, and Kusal Mendis was run out without facing a ball. Then Avishka Fernando (97) and Pavan Rathnayake added 166 for the second wicket, taking Sri Lanka to 190 in the 28th over, Sky Sports and ARY News reported.

Rathnayake reached his hundred off 87 balls and made 130 off 106 with 15 fours and three sixes. Dasun Shanaka hit 97 off 50, and he and Rathnayake added 133 off 79 balls. Liyanage reached 50 off 22 balls. Sri Lanka needed 8 off the last over; Josh Tongue took two wickets in it and finished with three, but Liyanage's six settled it with a ball to spare.

Pakistan still lead the table with two wins from two after beating Sri Lanka by 37 runs and England by 87; Sri Lanka have one win from two and England none. Pakistan vs England is next, on Sunday 25 October at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, at 1:30pm PKT (toss 1pm), live on PTV Sports and the Tamasha and Tapmad apps. Pakistan then play Sri Lanka in Lahore on Tuesday 27 October.

What it means for Pakistan on Sunday

Pakistan's bowlers stopped England at 215 in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, with Arafat Minhas taking 6 for 40, and Brook made only 5 that day before Minhas bowled him. Thursday showed both sides of it: England's captain can take a game away in 15 overs, and on this tour's flat pitches even 429 was not enough.
