Hasan Mahmud takes a Test hat-trick as Bangladesh lead Afghanistan by 230 in Abu Dhabi
Mahmud is only the third Bangladesh bowler with a Test hat-trick, after Alok Kapali and Sohag Gazi. Rahmat Shah made an unbeaten 105 for Afghanistan.
Hasan Mahmud took a Test hat-trick on day three of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday 11 October 2026, becoming only the third Bangladesh bowler to do it, after Alok Kapali in 2003 and Sohag Gazi in 2013, ESPNcricinfo reported. His victims were Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmed and Zia-ur-Rehman, and the haul of 5 for 55 took him to 50 Test wickets.
How the day went
- Afghanistan 240 all out: they began the morning hoping for a lead, with Rahmat Shah and Ikram Alikhil having added 72 from 139 for 4. Ebadot Hossain (4 for 56) broke the 80-run stand by removing Alikhil, and Mahmud ran through the rest. Rahmat Shah finished 105 not out and Malik made 62.
- Bangladesh 346 and 124 for 3 at tea, a lead of 230. Tanzid Hasan made 31 before edging Yamin Ahmadzai (2 for 42) to second slip.
- Mushfiqur Rahim, out for a duck in the first innings, was 48 not out off 70 balls with seven fours, and Najmul Hossain Shanto 23 not out off 73 without a boundary, in an unbroken stand of 71.
By the close the live scorecard showed Bangladesh 223 for 6, a lead of 329, with two days to play.
Why Pakistan fans should care
Bangladesh beat Pakistan 2-0 in Pakistan in 2024, and their pace attack of Mahmud, Ebadot, Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana was central to that series. A seam bowler taking a hat-trick on a UAE pitch, a venue Pakistan used as a home for years, says a lot about how far Bangladesh's fast bowling has come. Naseem Shah, playing in tonight's T20I, took his own Test hat-trick against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi in 2020.
