Karachi University events now need VC approval 15 days ahead; departments can no longer invite ministers directly
A Registrar's notification makes prior approval mandatory for every seminar, conference and programme on campus, after a string of events with politicians and influencers.

The University of Karachi has made the Vice Chancellor's prior approval mandatory for every programme and event on campus, including the guests invited to it, under a notification issued by the Registrar, ProPakistani reported on Saturday. No academic programme, seminar or conference may be held, and no political or non-political guest may take part, without that approval.
The new rules
- Approval first: every programme, seminar, conference or other event inside the university needs the Vice Chancellor's approval, sought through the Registrar.
- 15 days' notice: deans, directors and heads of department must apply at least 15 days before the event, with details and documents on the prescribed proforma.
- Invitations from the Registrar only: an invitation to a minister, dignitary or other special guest can be issued only by the Registrar's Office, on behalf of the department, after approval. Departments can no longer invite guests directly.
- Penalties: breaking the instructions may lead to disciplinary action under the university's rules.
Why now
The notification follows a run of programmes held before the semester break. A day earlier, MQM-Pakistan leader and Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal attended an event of the Department of Computer Science, and Sindh's Minister for Boards and Universities Ismail Rahu was due at its closing session. Before that, a Department of Mass Communication programme was attended by social media influencers, former federal minister Asad Umar and television drama actors.
What it means for students and societies
- Plan earlier. A society or department planning a seminar, career fair or cultural event after the break now needs to start paperwork at least two weeks ahead, longer if the date matters.
- Guest lists go through the Registrar. Students cannot promise a guest speaker an invitation until the Vice Chancellor has approved it.
- Check with your department before you print banners or sell tickets.
