University of Amsterdam PhD 2026: 6 funded places paying up to €4,051 a month, deadlines from 16 October

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has six funded PhD places open across five vacancies, with a gross salary of €3,204 a month in the first year rising to €4,051 in the fourth. At today's euro rate of Rs 315.95, that is roughly Rs 1.01 million to Rs 1.28 million a month before Dutch tax. These are paid employment contracts, not tuition scholarships, and applicants from Pakistan can apply. The first deadline is 16 October 2026.

What the money looks like

• Salary: €3,204 gross a month in year one, rising each year to €4,051 in year four (Dutch collective agreement scale for PhD candidates).
• On top: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
• Contract: four years of employment.
• In rupees: about Rs 1,012,000 to Rs 1,280,000 a month gross at Rs 315.95 per euro. Check the live rate with our currency converter or the euro rate page. Dutch income tax and social contributions come off the gross figure, and Amsterdam rents are high, so budget on the net.

Who should apply

The ecology posts suit MPhil or MS graduates in environmental science, microbiology, soil science or chemistry. The language brokering posts fit linguistics, psychology and education. 2. Prepare a CV, a motivation letter written for that project, transcripts and degree certificates, and contact details for referees.
3. Submit through the UvA vacancy portal before 23:59 Amsterdam time on the closing date (Amsterdam is three hours behind Pakistan until late October).
4. Keep your passport valid; a successful candidate from Pakistan will need a Dutch residence permit before starting.

Common mistakes

• Sending one generic letter to several projects. Each has a different supervisor.
• Missing the time zone: a 23:59 Amsterdam deadline is 02:59 the next morning in Pakistan.
• Paying an agent. Applications go straight to the university's own portal.
