Steven Soderbergh steps in to finish The Batman Part II shoot while Matt Reeves deals with a family matter

Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete filming on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves is away dealing with a family matter, Variety confirmed on Thursday 15 October 2026. Soderbergh will work on the final weeks of principal photography, with the full support of DC Studios.

What the studio and the directors said

A studio representative said Soderbergh, "as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt" and would help the writer-director finish the shoot, adding that the two would "work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt's vision of the film".

Soderbergh said his goal was "to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film", calling Reeves's first Batman film "stunning".

Reeves said on X that he is still working on the production, just not on set while principal photography wraps up, Variety reported.

Why production stopped

Warner Bros. and DC Studios paused production in early October, saying Reeves had temporarily stepped away to focus on "a family matter". The studio has not given details, and Searchable does not speculate on private family matters.

Who is in it and when it comes out

• Robert Pattinson returns as Batman, with Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright in the cast.
• Release date: February 2028. The sequel was first set for 2 October 2026, then moved to 1 October 2027, and in June pushed again to February 2028.
• Reeves's first film, The Batman, came out in March 2022.

Soderbergh won the best director Oscar for Traffic and is known for Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven and Sex, Lies, and Videotape. His recent films include Black Bag and Presence.
