Karachi's SMCHS food street reopens as a car-free food walk on 1 November, 6pm to 2am
The revamped street in Chanesar Town will close to vehicles every evening so families can walk and eat. Murad Ali Shah is due to open it on Sunday.
Karachi gets a new car-free food walk on Sunday 1 November: the old food street in the Sindhi Muslim Cooperative Housing Society (SMCHS) has been rebuilt by the Chanesar Town administration and will be closed to ordinary traffic every evening from 6pm to 2am. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah is due to inaugurate it, ARY News reported.
What to know before you go
- Opens: Sunday 1 November 2026
- Where: the food street in SMCHS, in Chanesar Town, off Shahrah-e-Faisal
- Car-free hours: 6pm to 2am, every day, so the street is for walking only during the busy hours
- Food: traditional Pakistani dishes, barbecue, Chinese, fast food, ice cream and shakes
- Who it is for: the town administration says the aim is a safe, family-friendly place to eat and stroll in the evening
Why it matters
Karachi has few public spaces where families can walk at night without traffic. Keeping cars off a whole street for eight hours every evening turns a busy road of roadside eateries into a place to stroll, and it is the first such scheme run by Chanesar Town.
Getting there and parking
The administration has not yet announced dedicated parking. If you drive, expect to park on nearby streets, or come by ride-hailing or rickshaw.
