Why gold went up
The local rate follows the world price. Spot gold rose $59 to $4,184 an ounce on Friday, Business Recorder reported. With the rupee steady near Rs 277 to the dollar, almost all of the move in Pakistan came from the world price.
Gold is still below its September level: on 21 September a tola was Rs 457,536, so it remains about Rs 16,600 under that.
What it costs you
- A 2-tola set of 22k bangles: at the 22k rate the gold alone is a little over Rs 800,000 before making charges. Run your own weight through our gold converter, which also converts tola, grams and ounces.
- Zakat: the gold nisab is 7.5 tola, which at Friday's rate is about Rs 3.31 million of 24k gold. If you hold gold, cash or savings, our zakat calculator works out what is due, and our nisab guide explains which nisab to use.
- Selling old gold: jewellers buy back at a discount to the posted rate, usually after testing purity, so ask for the deduction in writing before you agree.
The association revises rates once or twice a day on weekdays; Saturday and Sunday rates normally stay where Friday closed.
