Pakistan and the United States discussed long-term energy supply contracts and US investment in Pakistan's refinery upgrade programme on Monday 26 October 2026, when Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik met US Chargé d'Affaires Natalie A. Baker, Business Recorder reported from a government press release.

What was on the table

  • Long-term supply contracts: both sides spoke of possible long-term energy supply deals. No volumes, prices or contract terms were announced.
  • US LNG: the managing directors of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) briefed the meeting on US companies' interest in supplying liquefied natural gas to Pakistan.
  • Refineries: Malik said investment in refinery upgrades could open opportunities for US financial institutions.
  • Minerals: he invited US companies to the upcoming Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum.

What each side said

Malik briefed Baker on Pakistan's energy security measures and the fuel supply challenges caused by the war in the Middle East, and thanked the US for its support. Baker congratulated Pakistan on managing its fuel supplies and said the country had "avoided a fuel shortage". She said the US was ready to work closely with Pakistan on its energy needs and was optimistic about long-term contracts.

Why it matters now

Qatar supplies LNG to Pakistan State Oil under long-term contracts, and its production was suspended after the US-Israel strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in February, Dawn has reported. On the same day as this meeting, the Lucky Group and QatarEnergy consortium dropped its plan for a private LNG terminal at Port Qasim; see our report. A second supplier on long-term contracts would spread that risk.
