"Mogging" has been named word of the year for 2026 by the Collins English Dictionary, BBC News reported on Tuesday. If you have seen it in comments on TikTok, Instagram or X from Pakistan this year and wondered what it means, here is the short version.

Mogging meaning

To mog someone is to outshine, outperform or upstage them, most often in looks. "He mogged everyone at the wedding" means he looked better than everyone there. Being mogged is the opposite. It can be a playful put-down or a compliment, depending on how it is said.

It is not the same as "mugging" (a robbery) or the British "mugging someone off" (making a fool of them).

Where the word came from

Collins says the word is often traced to the acronym AMOG, "alpha male of the group". It was used on bodybuilding forums in the mid-2010s and in online men's spaces before it went mainstream. It now turns up in "looksmaxxing" communities, where people swap tips on how to look their best, and far beyond them.

Use of the word rose 210% in 2026, Collins said.

Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said the choice "shows how each generation leaves its mark on language", calling it "a great example of how Gen Z and Gen Alpha have adopted a word and turned it into humorous slang".

The rest of the Collins 2026 shortlist

The dictionary's 10-word shortlist, as reported, included:

  • Ghost job: a vacancy an employer advertises with no intention of filling it. Anyone who has applied for jobs on LinkedIn will know the feeling.
  • Hydration break: made famous by this summer's football World Cup.
  • p(doom): someone's estimate of the probability that AI leads to the collapse of civilisation.
  • Manchesterism: a UK political term about handing power to the regions.

Collins builds its list from a database of written and spoken English, including social media, to track how the language is changing.

Last year's words

Collins picked vibe coding (building an app by describing it to an AI) for 2025. Oxford chose rage bait for 2025, and Dictionary.com has picked maxxing.

Why it matters to job seekers here

Of the shortlist, "ghost job" may be the most useful for readers in Pakistan. If an advertisement has no closing date, no named employer or keeps reappearing for months, treat it with care. Our jobs board lists only vacancies taken from official advertisements, each with its closing date.
