Breadth was strong: of 499 companies that traded in the ready market, 368 rose, 103 fell and 28 were unchanged. Volume rose about 63% from Tuesday and the value of shares traded climbed about 71%, so this was not a thin-market move.

Why it matters

ARY's report did not give a single reason for the rally. It came on a day when markets around the world reacted to the US midterm results, in which Democrats won both houses of Congress (our midterms page), and when the rupee also gained against the dollar in interbank trade, Business Recorder reported. Our KSE-100 data page keeps the daily closes and the history, and the USD to PKR page tracks the rupee.

For a reader holding shares, a 2.38% index move means a Rs 500,000 portfolio that tracks the index gained roughly Rs 11,900 on paper in a day. If you sell, gains are taxed: the capital gains tax calculator works out what you would owe.

More Pakistanis are investing

The rally lands as the investor base keeps growing. The PSX added 26,843 investor accounts in October, taking the total past 683,000, according to SECP figures reported by ProPakistani. More than 200,000 investors have joined in 2026.

  • Young investors lead: people aged 18 to 30 opened 14,634 accounts in October, 55% of the total; 31 to 45 year-olds opened 9,290.
  • Women: 3,923 of the new accounts, or 15%.
  • By province: Punjab 14,891, Sindh 7,643, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 1,894, Islamabad 1,419, Balochistan 370, Azad Kashmir 340, Gilgit-Baltistan 150, overseas 136.

The SECP says it wants 2.5 million stock market investors and is running an awareness campaign. It also counts 13 public offerings on the exchange so far this year.

Before you buy

A single strong day says little about next week. The index fell more than 1,500 points on two days in late October when Brent crude spiked. Only invest money you will not need soon, use a broker licensed by the SECP, and never buy on a tip from a WhatsApp group.
