The Shanghai Masters semi-finals are set. On Saturday, former champion Daniil Medvedev plays 20-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar, and top seed Alexander Zverev meets Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, after Friday's quarter-finals in Shanghai.

Friday's quarter-final results

  • Daniil Medvedev (6) beat Tommy Paul (18): 6-3, 1-6, 6-3
  • Rafael Jodar (13) beat Casper Ruud (24): 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

Medvedev, 30, who won the title here in 2019, took the first set after saving seven break points in a long sixth game, lost the second heavily, then went 2-0 up in the third and served it out on his second match point, ARY News reported.

Jodar's win was his fourth comeback from a set down this week. Ruud saved three match points in the deciding set before a double fault ended the match. Jodar is the youngest player to reach the Shanghai semi-finals since the tournament began in 2009.

Zverev reached the last four on Thursday by beating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 (our report).

Jodar's apology

Jodar's week has not only been about results. In his last-16 win over Botic van de Zandschulp on Wednesday, he snapped at a ball kid for his towel after losing a point and swore at them in Spanish. Chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote, who speaks Spanish, gave him a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, and Jodar argued the call.

After beating Ruud he apologised. "I shouldn't have done that to the ball kid. It was my mistake," he said, Business Recorder reported. He said the umpire was right, that he should have accepted the warning, and that he wanted to apologise to the ball kid in person.

A tournament of upsets

The draw opened up early: Carlos Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs (report) and Novak Djokovic to Hubert Hurkacz (report).

When to watch in Pakistan

Shanghai is three hours ahead of Pakistan, so take three hours off the times on the tournament's order of play, which is published each evening for the next day. The final is on Sunday.
