Vincent Kompany in hospital after collapsing at Bayern training; staff take Freiburg match tonight
The Bayern Munich coach, 40, collapsed while watching the reserve team train on Friday and is undergoing tests. His assistants will lead the Bundesliga leaders at Freiburg today.
Vincent Kompany, the Bayern Munich head coach, was taken to hospital on Friday 23 October after collapsing during a training session of the club's reserve team, Bayern said in a statement. He is undergoing "thorough examinations" and will stay under medical care. The club has not given a diagnosis.
Kompany, 40, was watching the second team train when he collapsed and needed treatment from an emergency medical team, according to the club and Dawn's report.
What Bayern said
Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sport, said Kompany's health is the club's "top priority" and that he will get all the care and time he needs. Until further notice, Kompany's coaching staff will run training and take charge of matches. Eberl said the staff has the club's full confidence.
He had been unwell for a week
The collapse follows several days of illness. Kompany missed training and the pre-match press conference on Tuesday before Bayern's Champions League game against Arsenal. Assistant coach Aaron Danks said then that a virus had "affected his legs at times" and that Kompany needed rest. Kompany himself had said he caught a virus the week before and "didn't listen to my body", Dawn reported.
Who leads Bayern today
Bayern, top of the Bundesliga on goal difference after six games, play third-placed Freiburg away on Saturday 24 October. The match is listed for 3:30pm German time, which is 6:30pm in Pakistan. Kompany's assistants, with Danks the most senior public voice, will be on the touchline.
The next big date is the Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid on 3 November.
Kompany's record at Bayern
The former Manchester City captain joined Bayern in 2024. He won the Bundesliga in each of his first two seasons and the German Cup in 2026. In 74 Bundesliga matches under him, Bayern have won 57 and lost only three, according to Dawn.
