Gemini in Android Auto gets personal: it can now read your Gmail and calendar while you drive
Google's opt-in Personal Intelligence reaches Android Auto from 20 October, with cars that have Google built-in to follow.
Google is bringing a more personal version of its Gemini assistant to Android Auto, starting from 20 October. The feature, called Personal Intelligence, lets Gemini draw on your Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps, YouTube, Search history and other Google apps to answer questions about your own plans while you drive, TechCrunch and The Verge reported.
Cars with Google built-in, where Google's software runs in the car itself rather than on a phone, will get it "in the coming months".
What it does on the road
Google's own example is an airport run. If you are driving to the airport and your calendar shows the flight is delayed, Gemini can tell you. You can also ask two things at once, such as your gate number and whether the flight is still on time, and get both answers together.
Because it reads your own data, it is opt-in. Drivers have to switch it on, can turn it off at any time, and choose which Google apps it may connect to.
Android Auto vs Google built-in
- Android Auto is an app on your phone that puts maps, music and messages on the car's screen when you plug in or connect. Personal Gemini starts rolling out here first.
- Google built-in is software inside the car, from makers that ship it in their infotainment systems. It gets the feature later.
Gemini has been in Android Auto since November 2025 and is already in millions of cars, according to TechCrunch.
Will it work in Pakistan?
Not yet clear. Google launched Personal Intelligence across the US in March 2026 and lists it as a beta in other markets, and the reports do not name which countries or languages the in-car version will reach. Pakistani drivers who use Android Auto should look for the option in Gemini's settings on their phone once the update arrives; if it does not appear, it has not reached Pakistan.
A privacy trade-off
The feature is useful precisely because it reads private data: your email, your calendar, your searches. Before turning it on, choose only the apps you are comfortable having read aloud or summarised in a car where others may be listening.
