Glee reboot confirmed: Disney+ and Hulu order a new series from Ryan Murphy, 11 years on

Glee is coming back. Disney+ and Hulu have ordered a new series of the musical comedy-drama from 20th Television, the studio behind the original, with co-creator Ryan Murphy returning, Variety reported on Wednesday 21 October. Deadline also reported the series order. Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk, who created the show together, have written the script, according to Geektown.

The original ran for six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015 and won six Emmy Awards. It followed the New Directions show choir at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio.

Who is coming back

No cast has been announced. Murphy has said he contacted about ten members of the original cast and that they were enthusiastic, Geektown reported. The original ensemble included Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley and Darren Criss. Colfer joked earlier that fans "would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands" if he said no, in comments first given to Bustle.

The reboot will go ahead without three of the original stars: Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) died in 2013, Mark Salling (Puck) in 2018 and Naya Rivera (Santana) in 2020.

Why now

Disney says Glee's music still draws about four million monthly listeners on Spotify, and Murphy said in July that the show was finding a younger audience on streaming. No storyline, episode count or premiere date has been announced.
