Relief tokens now work nationwide

From the midnight just passed, the Rs 100-a-litre relief for bikes, rickshaws, qingqis and cars up to 800cc is live outside Islamabad too. Register by SMS to 9771, then send TOK to 9771 before each fill. The Prime Minister has ordered facilitation desks at petrol stations, staffed by officials, volunteers and pump staff, to help people register.

One risk: the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association said on Wednesday that dealers cannot sell at the discount under the current repayment arrangement and threatened to shut pumps if forced to. The government says stations are paid back within 24 hours through the State Bank. Our 9771 relief explainer has the SMS format, quotas and what to do if a pump refuses your token.

What to do today

  1. Check the rate before you fill. Prices reset every 24 hours now.
  2. Register for relief if you ride a bike or drive an 800cc car, and carry your token.
  3. Fill in one go. A bike token covers 5 litres; topping up 2 litres at a time wastes it.
  4. Watch the trend on our petrol price and diesel price pages.
