Why prices now change almost daily
Prices are now set daily. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced the move on 17 July, and the cabinet gave OGRA the job of daily decisions based on international prices, Dawn said; weekly revisions had applied since early March. Dawn linked this rise to higher international prices after renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States. Brent crude topped $110 a barrel this week, as we reported.
The government still collects about Rs 114 a litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs 100 a litre on diesel, according to Dawn.
How far prices have come this year
- Petrol was about Rs 266 a litre in early March and peaked at Rs 458.41 on 3 April.
- Diesel rose from Rs 281 after the US-Iran war began on 28 February to a peak of Rs 520.35 on 3 April.
The Rs 100-a-litre relief for motorcycles, rickshaws and cars up to 800cc, announced on 13 September, still applies for registered users: see who qualifies and how to claim.
